First Look At The Villain In “Elysium”

“Elysium” is the sci-action film written and directed by Neill Blomkamp. Set in 2159 the story is about two classes of people that exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds. The film stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Michael Shanks and Alice Braga.

In an interview with Empire UK Copley explains that early rumors of a Joker-like character are false, but he also details how he brought his character to the screen: “What I did with him — which I try to do with all my original characters — was draw from real life. I combined references from a very infamous South African military battalion called 32 Battalion, that fought in the Border Wars in South Africa, and a stereotype of character that you get in the south of Johannesburg, where the guys are a little bit more comfortable with violence!”  Check out Sharlto Copley’s character below. “Elysium” hits theatres Aug. 9th 2013.
