My Review Of “Nightmare Alley” 2010

cryptkeeper

movieposter     “Nightmare Alley” opens with a classic, humor rich scene of obscene and gore-ific hilarity. Walter Ruether comes back perfectly with his follow up to “Junkfood Horrorfest” once more with a classic death scene by the dumpster. The film stars David Hayes, Danny Marianino, Keith Jackson, Tana Satana, Geno Dellamorte, Brian Carr, and the ghoulish host Scarlet Fry. “Nightmare Alley” was written, produced and directed by Walter Ruether and Laurence Holloway.
The anthology starts off with “A Fistful Of Innards” which tells the story of three outlaws who find more than they bargained for when a meteor falls from the sky and has supernatural effects on them. It is an old west tale that proves that greed can be bad for your health. This story sets the tone for many more twisted tales that span from a demonic rat to flesh eaters and more.
Nightmare-Alley-4     The stories in “Nightmare Alley” are fresh, entertainingly ghoulish tales of karmic justice reminiscent of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and “Outer Limits”. The blood flow is plentiful. The gore is classic and simple shots that fit the fun, humorous approach to horror Walter Ruether is known for. Scarlet Fry proves once more to be the coolest ghoul that ever hosted. “Nightmare Alley” is classic story telling filled with dark, demented visions.

“Carrie” Remake Ruined Already?!

carrie-remake-poster-chloe-moretzNow I am not going to panic just yet but recently Roger Birnbaum said that the upcoming remake of Stephen King’s “Carrie” will have aspects of “found footage” within the film. Okay so I am  alittle panicked. By the time this comes out the whole found footage thing is like already over done to death! So how can they take such a risk on one of the possibly coolest remakes in the works? I think they are taking too much of a chance. This remake already has the potential of being a big joke simply because nothing will ever stand as strong as the original and to mess with the core concept can either come off as laughable or brilliant. I think the found footage additive within this remake will be more laughable than brilliant. Sorry to say that but I hope I am wrong!

Chloe Moretz (Let Me In) is starring in the title role, and that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's (HBO's"Big Love") screenplay is supposed to be more a re-adaptation of King's original novel than a remake of Brian De Palma's 1976 classic. Julianne Moore has been offered the role of Margaret White but it could go to Jody Foster as well. Who knows, this film already has me cringing, and not in the good way! Well at least the poster is cool-ish.

The Most Exciting News For Me Ever!

Evil Mothers To Celebrate With On Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is fast approaching so here is my list of movies to celebrate the one day of year when even the most fucked up mommie’s out there can get some love. I personally have a great mother whom I adore. However a lot of people out there do not, and some out there have pure psycho’s for mothers. So what better way to embrace the crazy than to enjoy a Mother’s Day marathon of truly fucked up mothers, to help those of us with good mom’s appreciate them a little more.

First I have to give this first mother a mention even though she is not flesh and blood. ‘Mother’ from the Alien franchise is first on my list because even though she is machine, she guides and protects her crew unless there is something more precious out there in the universe. In that case she will have crazy androids get rid of each and every one! So here’s to you ‘Mother’.
mother_computer-alien

Second on my list of really fucked up mothers is Yvonne DeCarlo as ‘Ma’.  In '”American Gothic” she is the one crazy mother who gives a solid meaning to “the family that slays together, stays together”.
american_gothicma
Following ‘Ma’ into the halls of horror is Piper Laurie as Adrianna Petrescu in Dario Argento’s “Trauma”. She is one truly twisted bitch that takes grief and tragedy to a whole other level. Revenge truly is a mother in pain.
trauma-6
Next up for the role of psychotic mother is Jordan Ladd who plays Madeline Matheson  in “Grace”. This mother proves that the bond between mother and child is one powerful cluster-fuck of emotion and loyalty.
grace-2-small
Following Madeline is a moma that everyone can relate to on some level. The crazy emotional woman who makes her love come with psychological scars and a healthy dose of self doubt. Joan Crawford has had many roles as a questionable mother. But the one that applies as a truly twisted bitch of a mom comes from her role as Lucy Harbin in “Straight Jacket”.
straitjacket2
Another mother than could be considered for the role of crossing the line her devotion and interest in her child’s life is “Hush” mother-dearest Jessica Lange as Martha Baring.
jessica_lange_hush_001
Next up as crazy mother of the all times comes from a fairly new film called “Baby Blues”. Collen Porch puts a true face of evil on postpartum depression. If you can’t love your children then kill ‘em is this woman’s view on family.
babyblues1
After Collen Porch comes total package of evil mother embodiment. “Mother’s Day” gave a new definition to the meaning of Mother’s Day for so many of us. I am truly thankful that my mother is in no way like this fucked up mommie!
CBP10MD
The second most twisted movie mother out there has to be the one and only Margaret White played by non other than Piper Laurie who brought the mother who cared too much syndrome to it’s religious knees in “Carrie”. And if it were not for my all time favorite mother in horror, Piper Laurie would be no.1.
carrie3
Now time for my number one psychotic mother! It is of coarse Pamela Voorhees played by Betsy Palmer. She is one mother from hell when it comes to killing in the name of your child. She is the legend that is Horror movie mothers.
tumblr_l73mwnrfyI1qzr8nao1_500

So with all these monstrous mothers in mind, Do Not Forget “Mother’s Day”!

New Poster For “The Bunny Game”

Finally after nearly two years the US is giving “The Bunny Game” proper respect. Check out the first of four promo posters building up for the US release of “The Bunny Game” in July.
BUNNY-1-BREATHE
In THE BUNNY GAME junkie hooker Sylvia Gray (performance artist Rodleen Getsic in a fearless turn) is abducted by trucker JR (Jeff Renfro). He subjects her, and the audience, to a sadistic journey into madness. Partly inspired by a real-life experience that Getsic endured, THE BUNNY GAME pushes the boundaries of extreme realism in horror cinema.

Crystal Lake Memories Docu-Style

crystal_lake_memories_doc

Here's the official press release:

Panic Productions and Hutson Ranch Media that the documentaryCrystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th officially began lensing on April 24, 2012 in Los Angeles, New York, Connecticut and Vancouver. Inspired by author Peter M. Bracke’s bestselling book, this thrilling retrospective promises to be the definitive look at the making of the iconic horror franchise.

From its inception in 1980, the Friday the 13th film series has proven to be as unstoppable at the box office as its hockey-masked, machete-wielding villain Jason Voorhees, who has terrorized the fictional town of Crystal Lake for more than 30 years. Since then, Friday the 13thhas become a true multimedia juggernaut, having spawned twelve feature films, a syndicated television drama and an extensive line of merchandise and collectibles. What’s more, revenue figures are as staggering as they are relentless: over 95 million tickets sold and nearly $600 million in domestic box office receipts alone.

Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th promises to give horror fans a unique insider’s look into the iconic horror series, featuring over 100 interviews with cast and crew spanning all twelve films and the television series, many of whom have never before publicly discussed their involvement in the long-running franchise. The documentary is written and directed by Daniel Farrands and produced by Thommy Hutson, who previously combined forces on the most acclaimed horror franchise documentary ever made, 2010’s Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, an epic four-hour journey that chronicled the making of director Wes Craven’s seminal 1984 shocker and its seven sequels. Independently produced, financed and released by Farrands and Hutson, Never Sleep Again won The Academy of Science Fiction and Horror’s prestigious Saturn Award in 2010 for “Best DVD Release” as well as two Home Media Magazine Reaper Awards for “Best Direct-to-Video Release” and “Best of Show.”

"Never Sleep Again is widely-regarded as the definitive retrospective on Freddy Krueger and the eight Nightmare on Elm Street films, so we thought it only fitting that Jason, who has appeared in twelve films, be given his due," says writer/director Daniel Farrands, who previously served as editor and co-publisher of the groundbreaking book which inspired the new documentary and produced Paramount Home Entertainment’s Deluxe Edition DVD releases of the Friday the 13th films. A veteran of the horror genre, Farrands wrote the screenplay for Dimension Films’ Halloween 6 and produced Lionsgate’s hit supernatural thriller, The Haunting in Connecticut, which grossed $80 million at the box office worldwide. "I literally grew up on the Friday the 13th films,” says Farrands. “And in a very real way the series is responsible for my career in the film industry. It is truly an honor to chronicle the history of the series in a comprehensive documentary that I hope will serve as a worthy companion piece to the films and satisfy the series’ loyal fans.”

Producer Thommy Hutson who, in addition to Never Sleep Again, also wrote and produced definitive documentaries on Scream and The Return of the Living Dead, agrees. “After exploring the success and making of nightmares, ghost-faced killers and wise-cracking zombies, the time felt right to document the rise of one of the most well-known, feared and loved villains of our generation,” he says. “I am thrilled to be part of a project that will undoubtedly be the definitive story of not just Jason Voorhees, but the film franchise that created him. It’s a campfire tale long overdue.”

Upon its original release as a collectible hardcover edition in October 2005, Crystal Lake Memories was instantly hailed as one of the most lavish, comprehensive and meticulously researched books ever created about a film series. Author Peter M. Bracke crafted a narrative as full of shocks and surprises as the films themselves, painting a graphically compelling picture of one of horror’s most enduring franchises. In April 2012, an all-new and fully expanded eBook edition of Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of ‘Friday the 13th’ was released to the iBooks, Kindle and Nook platforms. “As a life-long fan of Friday the 13th, it was a dream come true to document the series with the original hardcover and electronic versions of Crystal Lake Memories,” says Bracke. “So I am absolutely thrilled that the team behind Never Sleep Again has decided to tackle all things Jason and Friday the 13th. It is simply an amazing honor to be a part of this ‘visual companion piece’ to Crystal Lake Memories, and I can't wait to see it!”

The documentary Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th is slated for a late 2012 release.

Graffiti Playhouse Plans To Pit The Jersey Shore Against Worse Things Than Guidos

20120327103402-beach1
“Zombeach” is the latest project from Graffiti Playhouse, the twisted minds behind “Blood Lodge” and “Terror At Ten Acres”. Now this new movie tells the story of locals hanging back in the off season on the Jersey shore only to have to deal with a new plague of debauchery. One that feeds on more than beer and sex.
The official story is this:
This is our newest project, “Zombeach”. It is a new kind of zombie apocalypse story. With the Jersey Shore giving the area a bad rap we are aiming to bring the focus back to the ‘Horror Capitol’ New Jersey, and not the Guido New Jersey.
The story is set in the off season, where only the locals remain to stick out the winter months next door to the Atlantic Ocean. But what happens when they get new neighbors and they are more violent and hungry for meat than a drunk guido on Independence Day? Guess you’ll have to watch and find out.

There is a funding campaign going on for this project.

My Review Of “The Legend Of Sorrow Creek” (2007)

The Legend Of Sorrow Creek     “The Legend Of Sorrow Creek” tells the story of four friends returning to a childhood summer place in the woods for a weekend of fun. This film was directed by Michael Penning and stars Christina Caron, Michelle Caron,  Michael Penning and Jon Deitcher. “Sorrow Creek” comes courtesy of Gravitas Ventures/ Brain Damage Films and was released in 2007.

This is a classic horror story that is reminiscent of early 80’s horror with a touch of “Blair Witch” thrown in, solely on the feel of of the cinematography of this film only. Beyond that there is no comparison between the two movies. This film managed to be scary and intense without the need for a found footage approach. It is a quality that a lot of indie horror projects lack. The raw grittiness of this movie adds to the eerie surroundings and story.

The Legend is a dark and evil tale that draws you into the setting almost instantly. There is a sense of danger just from the scenes of the forest around the ruins that spills over into the cabin were most of this films horrors take place. “The Legend Of Sorrow Creek” is actually one of your better low budget horror movies that actually delivers the scares. I purchased this movie on a whim and thankful to have done so. It is a really great story that actually deserves respect and many sequels.

New Clips From “The Raven”

59036a5b774b7c254ce154a16742eee5Synopsis:
"In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster).
When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.
Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe's writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late."

The Orphan Master By Jean Zimmerman

Paul Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan have already optioned Jean Zimmerman’s The Orphan Master for a movie project. The book still has a couple of months until its release date. The historical serial killer thriller, set in the New Amsterdam of 1633, is to be published by Viking on June 19, 2012.

12999143About the Book:
From a debut novelist, a gripping historical thriller and rousing love story set in seventeenth-century Manhattan

It’s 1663 in the tiny, hardscrabble Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, now present-day southern Manhattan. Orphan children are going missing, and among those looking into the mysterious state of affairs are a quick-witted twenty-two-year-old trader, Blandine von Couvering, herself an orphan, and a dashing British spy named Edward Drummond.
Suspects abound, including the governor’s wealthy nephew, a green-eyed aristocrat with decadent tastes; an Algonquin trapper who may be possessed by a demon that turns people into cannibals; and the colony’s own corrupt and conflicted orphanmaster. Both the search for the killer and Edward and Blandine’s newfound romance are endangered, however, when Blandine is accused of being a witch and Edward is sentenced to hang for espionage. Meanwhile, war looms as the English king plans to wrest control of the colony.
Jean Zimmerman brings New Amsterdam and its surrounding wilderness alive for modern-day readers with exacting period detail. Lively, fast paced, and full of colorful characters, The Orphanmaster is a dramatic page-turner that will appeal to fans of Hilary Mantel and Geraldine Brooks.

My Review OF “Demonic Toys” (1992)

MV5BMjE0ODcwOTI2OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTE0NTYzNQ@@._V1._SY317_CR6,0,214,317_
Ah, the pleasure that is “Demonic Toys”. This film has to be the second best film from Full Moon Direct for me personally. Next to “Puppet Masters” the classic tale of toys brought to life by a demonic entity that desires a rebirth into the flesh is one of the best puppetry styled horror tells ever made. Then again I have said time and time again that I am partial to stories about demonic forces or physical demons running rampant. This tale of terror combines all those elements in a fun and gory visual delight.
This particular gem from the mind of Charlie Band was directed by Peter Manoogian and stars Tracy Scoggins, Bentley Mitchum, Daniel Cerny, Michael Russo, Berry Lynch, and Ellen Dunning. The story is set in a warehouse were overstocked toys are kept. This movie has a classic them that ran through many late 80’s and early 90’s films. The story of black market guns sold on the streets of the inner city. Something that the NRA has fought very hard to downplay over the years.

014770_13“Demonic Toys” is a fun movie that is simply to entertain the horror craving masses. The plot is simple yet thorough. A demon that has waited for sixty-six years for an opportunity to be born into the flesh finally gets his chance when a pregnant cop and her partner venture to close to his burial grounds. A scenario that the demon claims to have painstakingly set into motion. The entity sees them into the warehouse so that the ritual can be performed that will see him born into the vessel growing in the cop’s womb. There are several more bodies roaming in the warehouse that offer much needed blood that will give the demon the strength to pull of this mystical stunt successfully. Unfortunately for the demon though the woman’s will to fight back a potential rape is stronger than his horniness.

DemonicToys003
This movie is great in the visual aspects of having childhood playthings twisted into demonic creatures that bleed green, speak blasphemously, and kill with enthusiasm. Dolls that curse, bears that mutate into monstrous were-beasts and toy robots that shoot real lasers. Classic mayhem with a cheeky fun concept.  “Demonic Toys” is a great popcorn flick with humor, gore, and some nudity as well as a delightful story of demons trying to take over the world. Plus the fact that the demon prefers the body of a little boy- what’s more evil than that? How could you not love this movie?!

From the Press Release:
TomCat Films LLC announces today that it has secured worldwide rights to Two Thirds Productions’ sci-fi horror feature, Germ, which premiered at the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART) on March 29th, 2012.
Germ, in which the military’s attempt to shoot down an orbiting satellite unleashes a space-borne epidemic on a remote, small town, was written and produced by J.T. Boone, who has a keen eye for the genre. Boone is currently in pre-production on Taste, his feature-length horror script that won the 2011 Hollywood Screenplay Festival’s Grand Prize for Horror and was a finalist for Best Unproduced Horror Script at the 2011 Chicago Horror Film Festival, among other awards.
Says Boone: “The Germ team is very excited about our growing relationship with TomCat and Ted. With Germ, we did our best to produce a fresh and compelling vision of people who could be your neighbors struggling with a horrifically violent situation and we are thrilled to work with TomCat in sharing that vision with the world.”
“When I first watched Germ it brought me straight back to the cult classics. This film is a must-see for the true horror or sci-fi fan,” says TomCat President and CEO, Ted Chalmers, an industry veteran with an impressive track record for offering highly marketable films for worldwide distribution. Chalmers has been involved in sales and distribution for a number of notable features including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hellraiser and Evil Dead 2, to name a few.
Germ’s director John Craddock describes the film as “set in a small Upstate New York village, whose inhabitants have been infected by a germ that causes them to become extremely violent, killing pretty much anyone they can lay a hand on and later themselves.”
Germ was shot on location in the Village of Jordan, New York. John Stith, a journalist for The Post Standard detailed a day of production stating, “Last week, ‘blood’ ran in the gutters of Main Street as crews shot footage for the climatic fight as the male lead, Max, played by Utica native, Michael Flores (Everything Must Go, Everything’s Eventual), fought his way through a crowd of zombies. Wrecked cars, trash and ‘bloodied bodies’ littered the street after the fight.”

Trailer And Poster For Thai Thriller “Distortion”

I will have to wait for the English subtitled version of the trailer before I know what the hell they are saying but the film looks creepy and cool. So here is the trailer for new Thai thriller flick “Distortion”.
new-distortion-one-sheet
"A grisly murder on a hot day in Bangkok sets in motion a psychological horror involving four people haunted by nightmares, repressed memories and the darkest past. Keun is a psychiatrist well-known for criminal profiling. He’s sent to help solve the murder and at the crime scene, he meets Tien, a forensic scientist with a traumatic childhood. During the investigation, Keun meets Kwang, a 19-year-old woman whom he first met 9 years ago. Back then, Keun was sent to treat Kwang after she witnessed her father killed her mother. Kwang confessed that her father, a soldier, had been molesting her. Keun and Kwang go to visit Kwang’s father at the prison. But they’re told that the soldier killed himself years ago out of shame. After that, Keun’s mental health is severely disturbed. He suffers from hallucination and sees a spirit dressed like a soldier. Then the second murder happens. The body was horrifically brutalized the same way as the first. Tien, who was once harassed by nightmare about the death of her mother, brings Keun to see a monk. Keun begins to believe that maybe the ghost of Kwang’s father is after him.
Keun asks Kwang to go under hypnosis, and to his shock, Kwang reveals that as a child she was never molested by her father. Keun goes with Kwang to meet her boyfriend, Key, who’s also Keun’s childhood friend. Key believes that actually, it was Keun who implanted into Kwang’s head the story of her father molesting her. Key recalls that, when he and Keun were 13, the two friends were lured into a forest and raped. The incident left a scar on Keun and that’s why he tried to trick Kwang to believe that she was raped. Keun confesses the truth in a press conference. He’s sued by the relatives of Kwang’s father. On the way to the police station, Keun reveals the identity of the serial killer to Tien. Keun has withheld that information because he wants the third victim to be killed first.
After seeing the police, Key takes Keun to the Boy Scout camp where they were raped as children. It’s revealed that Key is the serial killer who’s taking revenge on the men who raped them. He has kidnapped the last rapist and locked him up. But Keun helps the rapist escape into a forest. Key catches up with them. The rapist reveals that it was only Key who was raped, and it was Keun who helped lure Key to the rapists. Keun then confesses that as a child he was molested by his stepfather and wanted to inflict the same pain to others. Key’s consumed by rage and starts beating Keun violently. But Tien appears and shoots at Key. Keun spends the rest of his life in a mental asylum. He’s become a madman who lives his life in perpetual hallucination, never to emerge into the real world again."

Handle With Care By Josephine Myles

What Josephine Myles had to say about Handle With Care on Samhain’s Site:
HandleWithCare72lg“I surprised myself by writing a May/December romance for my second Samhain m/m romance novel, Handle with Care. What's more, I wrote one featuring an older, hairier man paired up with a nubile young twink. There isn't really that much of an age difference: Ben is thirty-three to Ollie's twenty, but the years feel more than that because Ben is seriously ill and permanently exhausted, whereas Ollie is an energetic, purple-haired skateboarder.”

The best things in life aren’t free…they’re freely given.

Ben Lethbridge doesn’t have many vices left. After raising his little sister to adulthood, he wasted no time making up for the youth he lost to responsible parenting. Two years of partying it up—and ignoring his diabetes—has left him tethered to a home dialysis regimen.

He can do his job from his flat, fortunately, but most of his favourite things are forbidden. Except for DVD porn…and fantasizing over Ollie, the gorgeous, purple-haired skateboarder who delivers it. Their banter is the highlight of Ben’s lonely day, but his illness-ravaged body is the cruel reality that prevents him from believing they’ll do anything more than flirt. Not to mention the age gap. Still, Ben figures there’s no harm in sprucing himself up a bit.

Then one day, a package accidentally splits open, revealing Ben’s dirty little secret…and an unexpected connection that leaves him wondering if he’s been reading Ollie wrong all this time. There’s only one way to find out: risk showing Ollie every last scar. And hope “far from perfect” is good enough for a chance at love.
Product Warnings: Contains superhero porn comics and a cute, accident-prone delivery guy with colour-changing hair. Readers may experience coffee cravings, an unexpected liking for bad mullets, and the urge to wrap Ollie up and take him home.

bedlam-omnibus-edition

Coming Soon!
The collected stories of berserker Erik Bedlam and his handler, Alanis Johansson will soon be available in one package – Bedlam Unleashed: Omnibus Edition – releasing in early May. A never-before-seen Bedlam story is a wonderful new addition to this collection!

Details:
The stories open with Alanis and Erik fighting for the High Irish King, Brian Boru. They leave this battle at Clontarf with hopes of heading home, however the North Sea brings an ominous drakkar into their path, and Erik and Alanis soon find themselves in a scrimmage on this ship filled with the dead.
They land in Scotland, where they encounter dragons, druids, and treachery. Then, with a bounty of gold, they head south, where Alanis experiences a vision rank with specters from his haunted past…

Excerpt:
With no shield or armor, the nude berserker charged forward, throwing himself into the flank of the opposing forces of Norsemen under the command of Earl Sigurd. As he stumbled through the tall grasses and over gnarled roots on the tree-lined battlefield, the soldiers of Wolf the Quarrelsome gave him a wide berth.
“WODAN!” was Erik’s cry. It sent the rest of us into a howling charge.
Erik rushed headlong into the Orkney mercenaries, burying his sword and leaving it in the chest of a stunned warrior. He then swept the blade of his axe wildly to the left and to the right. A trio of Irish Leinster rebels caught in the path of the berserker’s slashing emitted blood-choked gasps as their light armor rent. Limbs holding weapons disappeared in a metal flash.
I charged in with Erik and stabbed forward. Bedlam drew crimson with every stroke and called out for more flesh. I knew what he fought: In his eyes, he saw no man–just demons hungry for the children from Norse cribs.
A rider on horseback split the fray. The fighting men in its way parted, or were trampled under crimson hooves. Erik, standing in the charger’s path, lifted his battle-axe and yelled. He brought the weapon down almost too fast for the eye to see. The berserker buried the blade in the courser’s shoulder. The horse toppled with an unholy bawl, pulling the battle-axe from Erik’s hands as it went one way and the rider went the other. Erik rose, pushing himself to his knees, and then slammed his left hand into the chest of the downed rider, who also started to ascend. The fallen foe emitted a war cry to the Norse All-Father, while trying to sit up and wrest the big man from his chest.
“You call out to the wrong god, Nastrandian.” Erik said, cocking his massive arm back.
His other arm pinned the struggling Norseman. He smashed his fist into the man’s face, crushing through the thin nose protector of the metal helm. Erik raged on, performing this repeatedly until his wrist ran awash in gore. Stifled by the force of Erik’s blows, the man’s lamenting went unheard. True to Erik’s words, Odin cared little for individual deliverance.
After leaving the broken warrior, Erik darted off to the next group of shouting men and ringing steel. I followed his route, but stopped at his victim. This man’s face looked more akin to a smashed melon than a head. He still tried to rise. The eye remaining in his skull gazed at me, as his hand slid slowly to a dirk in his belt.
“Let me show you how the Irish have me send men to their maker,” I said, raising my sword. I slashed from right to left, gouging a furrow in the ground beyond the man. The smashed melon rolled free from its body in a spray of red juice.
I fought a few spear lengths behind Bedlam, creating a trail of abhorrence and death through the Orkney middle. The berserker tore into his foe like an enraged bear, fighting with his hands, sweeping out like great claws, grabbing up a weapon whenever he could. His frenzy crushed skulls, smashed bones, and tossed fully armored men airborne like sacks of potatoes. Erik wouldn’t be denied. We broke through a small copse of trees, leaving the thrashed vegetation in a downpour of blood.
Again, a thickset man across the field snapped into my mind. Gunthar Ulfsson, a man from the olden country who despised me. This time, silhouetted against the sky, there proved no doubt to his identity. He fought against my side, so killing him would cause no clannish wars. However, his form disappeared in the fray, carried away from my bile in the tide of killing.
For a moment, we stumbled outside the fighting. Erik’s flesh, awash in crimson with a dozen scraped wounds crossing his bare body, hunched over and nearly fell. I rushed to his side, but stopped an arm’s length short when my yearning for life overtook my sense of pity for this maniacal beast.
With sword at the ready, I called out: “Erik, are you wounded deep by the demon Lords?”
With labored movements, Erik turned towards me. His steely gray eyes met mine. I had to command my body not to break and run, which would surely bring me death by the madman’s crushing club-fists. The blood that matted his hair further exposed the horrible, old axe wound. My heart thudded beneath my chain mail.
“The demons leech at my soul, Alanis,” Erik muttered, then vitality returned to his eyes. “They shall not pull me to Valhalla this day. Nay! I’ll see the scum of Loki burn. I shall challenge Thor to a drinking bout another time.”
A fellow fighter from Wolf’s group drew close to give us happy congratulations, waving his sword in jubilation. Erik swung his arms wild and inadvertently broke this black haired Irishman’s nose. The giant Norseman saw red, charged, and seized the head of the man from our own standard. Before I could stop him, Erik twisted the head of the soldier backwards and took the fallen sword.
“Onward always I go, to grimly reap and gladly sow the seeds of Death…” Erik sang, and then stopped abruptly. His gaze latched onto something in the midst of the battlefield.
The big warrior stared at the waving raven banner held high amongst the clashing swords, flourishing spears, and cudgels. My fearless friend visibly shook, and he emitted a whimper of agony, as if the sight of the wind-whipped cloth struck pain deep within his mighty breast.
