A New Face In The World Of Trash Cinema: My Interview With “Trashology” Director Brian Dorton

brian dortonIndie Actor/Director Brian Dorton’s “Trashology” is a celebration of all that Americana Trash Cinema has given us over the past 40 years of B-movie elucidation of absurdities. Something that most people in the film industry attempt to steer clear of, only finding themselves buried in the subgenre by accident or misfortune. Trash cinema has only been embraced by those few cult fans who appreciate the exaggerated characters and situations that poke fun at the mundane and everyday life. The good, the bad and the fabulous.  Embraced by John Waters, who gave us such cult icons as Divine and Mink Stole, Trash Cinema has also given rise to new faces and visions of a style of film making that rails against the tide of mainstream normality and forces you face first in the bizarre and twisted caricatures of society. A vision that others  flee from or self medicate in order to escape.

Brian Dorton, like his inspiration John Waters, fully embraces Trash Cinema and does so with fresh modern vision and an understanding that crazy is fun! Take the Louisville, Kentucky based director’s  homage to the legendary Waters, “Trashology”. It is a film that gives rise to colorful all be it insane characters that dance the dance of the crazy wonderfully. With stories that explore the fringes of social normality in loud, proud fashion. It is a film that I hold as a true original piece of Indie brilliance in it’s exploration of life psychotic. In my interview with Brian Dorton, we discussed the film, his inspiration and the drama that comes from having the balls to embrace a subgenre that very few “get”, choosing to dismiss it as garbage-FUCK THEM! I know, as we all know, one man’s trash is a generation’s treasure. “Trashology” is produced through Dorton’s company reelEpic Entertainment and will be released on DVD and Home entertainment formats through Slasher//Video Distribution which is owned by Jesus! Jesus Terán.

Trashology_thumb[1]

ASouthernLife: How did the concept for "Trashology" come about?
Brian Dorton: Well, my team and I did many short films and one thing that they all had in common were the bizarre characters. After doing nearly 40 short films we decided we were ready to take on a feature. I love anthologies but don't know of many comedy anthologies, "The Ten" from 2007 comes to mind. I began to write the first segment which is "The Vat" and I loved the story so much and the characters that I built off it and Douglas and I thought this would be a great feature film. So I kept writing and interlocking the characters. The last task was a way to pull the 3 chapters together and that is how the wrap around developed.

ASouthernLife: Was there ever a moment when you were writing the scripts that you thought "it was too much" or that it "wouldn't work"?
Brian Dorton: Whenever I felt it might be too much that was when I was certain it belonged in the film.

ASouthernLife: There are so many micro plots and stories barely hinted at within the film do you have plans for a "Trashology II"?
Brian Dorton: We joke about it often but there are no plans as of now.

ASouthernLife: Which of the characters would you be most likely to be caught "squashing" with and which of the characters would you be more prone to kill and why?
Brian Dorton: I'd love to kill Ann because she is such a high riding bitch! I doubt I would ever actually want to partake in squashing but I'd like to see Ms. Green squashed!

ASouthernLife: Who did you model your character Katrina after, was it someone in your family?
Brian Dorton: She developed over the years from co-workers from the past. Just women that were absolutely ridiculous and over the top.

ASouthernLife: In the wrap around story you have Sean Kasky help "make a pie", was it hard to get him to agree to the scene?
Brian Dorton: He was reluctant at first thinking that the character was into it, but when he realized the character was against the idea, he became open to it.

ASouthernLife: Which is easier for you, writing the characters or directing the actors?
Brian Dorton: Both are about the same. I think directing can be easier for me than writing. I feel more natural when I direct.

ASouthernLife: This is your homage to John Waters, if you were caught in his house "copping" some souvenirs, what items would you take?
Brian Dorton: A Franklin Mint Faberge Egg. (John Waters fans should get that reference.)

ASouthernLife: First ever John Waters film you remember seeing, what is your favorite film of his?
Brian Dorton: First was "Serial Mom" when I was 15 years old, then I became intrigued with his work and researched older films. I like "Female Trouble" the best but that is subject to change.

ASouthernLife: When did you realize you wanted to make movies?
Brian Dorton: When I was a teenager, around the time I saw the movie "Heathers".

crazy Fat EthelASouthernLife: You also have two other projects in the works, "Crazy Fat Ethel" and a film yet to be titled about a serial killer. What drew you to the film "Criminally Insane"?
Brian Dorton: Douglas and I saw "Criminally Insane" years ago and loved it! After we started getting more into the indie scene we had a discussion about how that film might be like today and really got obsessed with a remake. The other film is now titled "The Horror Network" which has become an anthology with Joseph Graham, Ignacio Martín, and Manuel Marín.

ASouthernLife: Will "Crazy Fat Ethel" be a true remake of the original or more of a reimagining?
Brian Dorton: It will pay tribute in a modern version. No CGI effects.

ASouthernLife: How are things coming with the "The Horror Network" anthology?
Brian Dorton: The script is done and we hope to have it out for people to see by Halloween.

ASouthernLife: There has been an attack on the film at IMDb lately, do you want to say anything about the rating the film has received by these "phantom" users on the movie site? As we all should know those ratings are bogus and anyone with character would realize you read the written reviews but foremost watch a film to see if you like it not go by a number rating!
Brian Dorton: It does make me question the integrity of the site but I imagine any film can be attacked so it's fair game. Hopefully people watch "Trashology" for themselves and decide. Saying negative things about me or my films doesn't bother me but I held IMDb up higher before I realized all they care about is how many hits their site receives.

ASouthernLife: I just want to finish by saying that "Trashology" is fun, entertaining and well done. Has the negativity of late affected your feelings or desire to make Indie films?
Brian Dorton: Thank you very much and no... I am unstoppable!

Trash Talk With With Geri Horn

geri hornGeri Horn may come from a small town in Kentucky but she is truly one gal with a big personality as evident in her many incarnations in the Indie cult anthology “Trashology”. I imagine after having birthed and produced such a lively and eclectic child such as Geri Horn Irvine, Kentucky was never the same. The hairdresser and multi-talented entertainer may not bee well known as some more famous divas but give a girl time. She is after all merely a fetus! A fetus with fabulous hair and stiletto's but still young enough to gain a cult following on her journey to fame and notoriety.

“Trashology” will soon be released through Indie distribution company Slasher//Video but it is not Geri’s only work. She will also been seen in several projects coming in the future. She plays a gypsy in “Mother’s Blood” and will be seen in “Model Hunger” as well as “Tales Of Poe” and “Crazy Fat Ethel” which is currently filming and also comes from the twisted mind of Brian Dorton. “Crazy Fat Ethel” is a re-imagining of the cult classic Indie flick “Criminally Insane”. However now is all about trash! From “squashing” , corsets and Jewish princesses Geri Horn has her sites set on the world. With more personalities than Sybil and a natural ability to harness them in entertaining fashion this queen is truly werqin’ her gifts flawlessly. I guess I should mention that Geri was not always Geri. She was born Rodney, a young boy who always fantasized about being in cereal commercials, later realized his dream of performing in school plays, talent shows and now in films that are destined to be cult classics.

geri horn as debbie
I had a chance to talk with Miss Geri Horn who I imagine shares a relationship with her counterpart much as Glory did with Ben in Season Five of Buffy. Okay so it maybe is a little more terrestrial than that but isn't far from the real transformation that gives rise to enigmatic persona. Mostly we trash talked about what else but her many characters in “Trashology” and fetishes. The characters are truly colorful, commanding and hilarious as is the entire anthology. Regardless of suspicious rating of phantom IMDber’s assault on the film. Currently there is an attempt by bogus accounts on the IMDb site to trash the film and not in a good way. A film that is true Americana filth at it’s finest, proving that John Water’s spirit will live on in cult cinematic trash! F.Y.I. as a rule of thumb one should not judge by number ratings alone. They are crap. Read the people who have seen the movies review and watch the films to make your own assessment.  To read my review of the film go here! Of coarse after you read my interview with Miss Horn.

trashology
ASouthernLife:  How did you get involved with Brian Dorton's "Trashology"?
Geri Horn: Well, I worked with Brian before and I think we work well together. We have fantastic chemistry .

ASouthernLife: What was your first reaction when you read the script?
Geri Horn: I love everything Brian writes. Its so funny and off the wall!

ASouthernLife: You play several characters (Big Debbie/Laura/Larry/Ms.Green/Victim)  in the movie that are varied archetypes of woman. Where did you get the inspiration for these colorful yet over the top women?
Geri Horn: I basically pull these out of my ass. I think of people in my life, twist and bend them till they are so messed up they just fit perfectly.

ASouthernLife:  Which of the characters was your favorite to play?
Geri Horn: Mrs. Green was the most fun to play not glamorous at all but she was this crazy old lady who was sweet. You still are kind of stand offish cause she is so terrifying.

ASouthernLife: I think for me Laura was my favorite. She reminded me on a tranquilized Sylvia Fine from The Nanny. Where did the inspiration for Laura come?
Geri Horn: She has a dash of Sylvia after watching her I see it but I was just going for a Jewish Marilyn Monroe with a dash of Karen walker.

ASouthernLife: How did "squashing" feel? Did it arouse you in any way...lol?
Geri Horn: No squashing does nothing for me but I was afraid for poor Doug. I thought for sure I was gonna kill him – haha .

ASouthernLife: Had you ever heard of "squashing" before this film?  I had not and I find it is hilarious! (My apologies to all the “Squashers” or “Squash-heads”)
Geri Horn: Yes- I was well aware of squashing. I seen it on Murray or Ricki Lake when I was a kid. Those girls where very large and the guys where 90 pounds. I was like dear lord I need to find a guy like that if he's into fluffy girls.

ASouthernLife:  Did you ever think you wouldn't make it through a scene? The material is so funny that I just don't see how you all kept a straight face!
Geri Horn: Yes- we all about died laughing but I'm a professional. I keep it together pretty good until reviewing the footage. Then I about pissed on myself.

ASouthernLife: What are some of your hobbies and passions in life aside from acting?
Geri Horn: I live to travel and see the world while I can. I like to go to flea markets, swimming and drawing.  I'm also a hairdresser, I love doing hair and make-up!

ASouthernLife: Do you have any fetishes and has anything ever gone wrong when trying to act out a fantasy?
Geri Horn: Well I like to wear corsets and heels while trying to be sexy. I know I'm going to end up stabbing someone with the heels. It hasn't happened yet but I'm waiting.

Directed by Gore Verbinski the film also stars Armie Hammer as John Reid a.k.a The Lone Ranger. Along with the new poster comes a release of the Super Bowl teaser.

My Review Of “Slasher House” 2012

SLASHERSlasher House” is an Independent film from Mycho Entertainment. Directed by MJ Dixon and produced on a budget of only 5,000 dollars the film is a very creative and stylized film that focuses on strong psychotic personalities that collide. A young woman awakens in a dilapidated institutional facility with a bizarre cast of characters and limited understanding of the tense orchestrated construct of her ordeal. The cast for this film that has been in the works since 2010 and final completion arriving in 2012 are Eleanor James, Adam Williams, Andrew M Greenwood, Wellington Grosvenor, Alex Grimshaw and featuring the voice of Blaze Bayley. I was given the opportunity to screen this film which quite frankly is a project that I have been keeping tabs on over the past couple of years mostly because of the vibrant promo artwork and curious story line.

In this film which begins in an almost abstract arthouse meets cinema verite style the first thing that drew me in was the use of a singular color shown in almost Argento celebratory fashion against a monochromatic harshness of fluorescent lighting.  The visual approach of this creates a cold desolate atmosphere that seems to dance with near graphic novel vibrancy. It held my attention with it’s shear uniqueness in artist prominence even as the slow emotionless beginning of the film gave me concern. That is not really a complaint against the film because I have learned when watching films that have a definite almost avant-garde technique that there is a process unfolding. A steady and strong build to some fevered pitch that will climax proudly before a brisk and dead stop. It is something that is both beautiful and beloved in genre film making that mirrors playhouse and expressionist artistry around the world. Almost symphonic, okay before I sound like a psychotic let me get to the point of that long descriptive.  “Slasher House” at times holds this ability beautifully and at other times tends to loose control during the crescendo to the climactic end. The parts that caused my mind to loosen the grip the film had where mostly during the steady dramatic interaction of the characters at the beginning of the film which seemed a bit cold but however harsh that may sound the part that works about this film is the fine dance between graphic action and character backstory sequences that are revealed in near grindhouse tribulation. If my comments seemed confusing I do apologize but I try to stay open and spoiler free in talking about movies and always approach my opinion based on the artist’s intend and direction and not on some preconceived notion that a set standard of expectations govern what makes a film work based on genre.

Here is the cut and dry truth of “Slasher House” and it’s blended genre styles. It has moments that make you want to turn off and if your looking for some major gore rich action packed spectacle then the film will disappoint you. If however you are a patient fan of Indie horror then you will be pleasantly surprised by cast of characters thrown into this creative story and the true character study perspective that calls your attention in anticipation of the final moments of the character interactions. Yes it is artistic and very experimental in vision playing with elements of gore, exploitation and grindhouse against atmospheric industrial arthouse moments which when it works it works well and when it doesn't, you feel it. There is blood and gore and action and all those things at play in the film when required which satisfies the core of the story which is horror. The ending left me with a bit more questioning as to the continuity of story’s major objective but I enjoyed the strange and steady storytelling that unfolds in “Slasher House” and I appreciated that the main focus was not specifically set on the blood gore or torture of lives here. The film won't be for everyone where horror fans are concerned but as a Indie film fan that likes the elements of avant-garde I enjoyed this movie.
