Trailer And Picturesque Images Of “No Man’s Land”

no man's land
Check out the trailer and some pretty picturesque stills of Western/horror thriller “No Man’s Land”. The film is directed by Steven Doxey and slated to begin filming this coming fall 2013 with a 2014 release date. It stars Kent Hadfield, Brandon Sean Pearson, Matthew Webb, Steve Bethers, Lucas Bybee and Julia Fae.

At the turn of the century in the American West, a small mountain mining colony on the verge of prosperity inadvertently spawn a horror beyond their control. A very detailed synopsis was given in the recent article posted by HorrorBug that suggests an almost creature-feature/supernatural element to the film. Read it below then check out the promo trailer.

Deep within the rugged snowcapped mountains of the wild American West lay the town of Prosperity. The lights of its huts, streets, and taverns shone in the endless dark like a sole firefly in the middle of an ocean. Prosperity’s bountiful coal mines lured the entrepreneurial. Its utter remoteness proved irresistible to thrill seekers. And Warren Hill, who owned most of those lands and mines, dreamed of an ever growing empire that rivaled Carnegie’s or Vanderbilt’s.

Then IT came. It. The creature. The beast. The unnatural, monstrous thing that slaughtered the town’s folk as one slaughters game for a Thanksgiving feast. And those were the lucky ones.  Others were spared. If those touched by the creature could truly be reckoned among the spared. For they may look like men, and they may sound like men; but men, they no longer were. Once one is touched by the beast, one becomes the beast.

Trailer And Images From “The Station”

970289_138149456374944_249676793_n

A film that will be showing at this year’s TIFF that is very intriguing is “The Station ( Blutgletscher)”. This Austrian flick is going back to the classic motif of horror/sci-fi that hints at the 80’s film “The Thing”. “The Station” is directed by Marvin Kren and stars Gerhard Liebmann, Edita Malovcic, Brigitte Kren and Hille Beseler. The film is a creature feature set high in the Alps.

At a climate research station in the Alps, the scientists are stunned as the nearby melting glacier is leaking a red liquid. It quickly turns to be very special juice — with unexpected genetic effects on the local wildlife.

New images have surfaced for Eli Roth’s next trave-escape/thriller. “The Green Inferno” will premiere at this year’s TIFF in September. Check out the images below.

How far would you go for a cause you believe in? In horror master Eli Roth’s terrifying new film, a group of college students take their humanitarian protest from New York to the Amazon jungle, only to get kidnapped by the native tribe they came to save: a tribe that still practices the ancient rite of cannibalism, and has a healthy appetite for intruders.

Trailer Released For “Fright Night II”

Fright-Night-2-BCheck out the trailer for “Fright Night II: New Blood”. The film will be a direct to DVD release follow-up to Farrell’s remake. It is directed by Eduardo Rodriguez and stars Will Payne, Jaime Murray, Sean Power, Sacha Parkinson. The trailer was handed out to fans at this year’s Comic-Con and encouraged by the studio to be uploaded. I am sure this is to test the buzz that will be generated for the film before they decide the definite fate of the film’s release. Jaime Murray as many are aware is getting a great deal of cult buzz for her role on SYFY’s ‘Defiance’ as well as some pretty cult-astic past roles.

When high school student Charlie attends a study abroad program with his horror obsessed friend “Evil” Ed and ex-girlfriend AMY in Romania, he soon discovers their young attractive professor Gerri (Jaime Murray) is a real life vampire. Too bad no one believes him. In fact, Evil Ed finds it amusing and it only feeds his vampire obsession. When Gerri turns Ed, Charlie seeks out Peter Vincent, the infamous vampire hunter (well, he plays one on TV) who is in Romania filming his show “Fright Night,” to teach him how to take down Gerri before she gets to Amy, who’s blood will cure Gerri of spending eternity as a vampire.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Lammas (Lughnasadh)

lughnasadhToday marks the start of the Harvest season or Lammas (Lughnasadh). We call these days the dog days of summer although this season  here in Kentucky has been a bit more like fall. However  much of the earth is still dry and parched, but the yellows and oranges and browns that greet us in Autumn are not far away. Apples are beginning to ripen in the trees, summer veggies are picked and the corn is tall, green and lush. Lughnasadh is Gaelic  for this festival marking the beginning of the harvest season that was historically observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Originally it was held on 31 July–1 August, or approximately halfway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox. However, over time the celebrations shifted to the Sundays nearest this date. Lughnasadh is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals; along with Samhain, Imbolc and Beltane. It corresponds to other European harvest festivals, such as the Welsh Calan Awst and the English Lammas.

Lammas (Lughnasadh) is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature and is believed to have pagan origins. The festival itself is named after the god Lugh. It involved great gatherings that included religious ceremonies, ritual athletic contests (most notably the Tailteann Games), feasting, matchmaking and trading. There were also visits to holy wells. According to folklorists, evidence shows that the religious rites included an offering of the first of the corn, a feast of the new food and of bilberries, the sacrifice of a bull and a ritual dance-play.

In Irish mythology, the Lughnasadh festival is said to have been begun by the god Lugh (modern spelling: ) as a funeral feast and athletic competition (see funeral games) in commemoration of his mother (or foster-mother) Tailtiu. She was said to have died of exhaustion after clearing the plains of Ireland for agriculture. Tailtiu may have been an earth goddess who represented the dying vegetation that fed mankind. The funeral games in her honor were called the Óenach Tailten or Áenach Tailten (modern spelling: Aonach Tailteann) and were held at Tailtin in what is now County Meath. The Óenach Tailten was similar to the Ancient Olympic Games and included ritual athletic and sporting contests. The event also involved trading, the drawing-up of contracts, and matchmaking. At Tailtin, trial marriages were conducted, whereby young couples joined hands through a hole in a wooden door. The trial marriage lasted a year and a day, at which time the marriage could be made permanent or broken without consequences. A similar Lughnasadh festival, the Óenach Carmain, was held in what is now County Kildare. Carman is also believed to have been a goddess, perhaps one with a similar tale as Tailtiu. After the 9th century the Óenach Tailten was celebrated irregularly and it gradually died out.

Lughnasadh and Lughnasadh-based festivals are held by some Neopagans, especially Celtic Neopagans. However, their Lughnasadh celebrations can be very different despite the shared name. Some try to emulate the historic festival as much as possible, while others base their celebrations on many sources, the Gaelic festival being only one of them. Neopagans usually celebrate Lughnasadh on 31 July–1 August in the Northern Hemisphere and 31 January–1 February in the Southern Hemisphere, beginning and ending at sunset. Some Neopagans celebrate it at the astronomical midpoint between the summer solstice and autumn equinox (or the full moon nearest this point). In 2013, this is on 7 August in the Northern Hemisphere.

New Horror Folktale “The Toyol” Coming Soon

the toyol“The Toyol” is a new psychological horror film based on an old Malay folktale. The project is a co-production of Little Big Film Company and Open Fire Films. The story follows a father attempts to reconnect with his six-year-old daughter in the wake of his wife's sudden and tragic death. Traumatized, the young girl retreats from her family only to find solace in a new and peculiar little friend who enters her life. A number of gruesome and untimely accidents leave neighbors and family members dead with only one thing in common: the daughter is the last to see them alive. With evidence mounting and his daughter the prime suspect, her father must race to uncover the real culprit and save them both. “The Toyol” will be directed by Brian Kazmarck from a script co-written with Russell Southam. It is scheduled to begin production in the spring of 2014. Like the film’s Facebook page to keep up with the latest on “The Toyol”.

A toyol is a dead fetus or stillbirth that's been re-animated by black magic. It's usually kept in a jar, or a box, and given offerings of food — often a few drops of blood from the creature's summoner. In return for the food and protection, thetoyol will lurk around the village at night, running errands for its master... errands the summoner would rather not be seen doing himself. Typical "errands" would include petty thefts or vandalism, which the toyol could get away with because of its tiny size. Since the toyol is really only a child, it would rarely be used for more serious mischief. Still, possessing a toyol is considered very dark magic indeed. Furthermore, though there are many legends about the ways to obtain a toyol, there are none about getting rid of one.

My Review Of “Frankenstein’s Army”

frankensteins_army“Frankenstein’s Army” is a sci-fi/action, horror blend leaves me a little conflicted. The Richard Raaphorst directed film which features monsters created by a descendent of legendary Frankenstein offers everything a video game/horror fan could ever dream in a live action film. Told in a documentary style the movie creates a first person level of intense action filled with explosions, violence, gore and adrenaline pumping bravado. Soviet military go behind enemy lines to capture the mad scientist, and proof of his rumored experiments for their own purpose. It is a sci-fi war between zombie-Nazi monsters and vicious communist war-dogs. So what about the film left me conflicted?

First in “Frankenstein's Army” , the story is a simple and allows only for testosterone grandeur, devoid of emotion or care for personality. The characters on both sides of this brutal opera are despicable in nature. You want to see the Russians die because essentially they are portrayed as war-mongering, heartless thugs- with no visible humanity. So that puts the uncomfortable light of heroics on seeing the Nazi monsters slaughter these a-holes. Yet Nazis are inherently disgusting reflections of man, so I never allowed myself to entertain that concept of pleasure in watching the creatures kill the soldiers. However something about the way the story was directed lead me to believe the writers and director wanted me to see the Nazis as some antihero, because the Russian soldiers where put in an obviously bad light in the film.  That was conflicting for me. Plus the actors kept slipping in and out of their characters accents. Half the time the hinted toward American or British accents before returning to Russian or German twangs.

There is the opposite side to the film though- The gore and action was killer. The intense, constant atmosphere held my attention the entire film. The monsters where some of the most creative designs I have seen in cinema in a long while, and the special effects pretty much rocked it from start to finish. In the end pretty much every one dies so that was pleasurable to watch-because they all really needed to so I could walk away from the film without feeling dirty for watching something that seemed to glorify the whole Nazi science-occult theme, under the guise of sci-fi-fantasy. I have to note that this is my issue I deal with when watching pretty much any of the Nazi themed sci-fi-horror stuff that has been coming out. I am always focusing on the story’s intent, fearing that the film will over romanticize Nazi fetishism. In a superficial sense I enjoyed the film based on the gore and monsters, but on a deeper level I never connected with the story or the characters, so I didn’t enjoy the film as much as I was hoping to.  I am 50/50 with “Frankenstein’s Army”.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Lithasblot July 31st

lithasblotJuly 31st is the Norse holiday Lithasblot. The harvest festival; giving thanks to Urda (Ertha) for her bounty. Often alms are given to the unfortunate at this time, or loaves in the shape of the fylfot (the Sun-wheel, which fell into regrettable disrepute during the dark times of the second World War when the symbol was perverted as a symbol of chaos and darkness).  Interestingly, Lithasblot 1941 was allegedly the time when the magical lodges of England performed rituals to keep the Nazi forces from invading their country; which may have worked, since Hitler eventually abandoned plans to invade Great Britain.  Lithasblot has long been associated with ceremonial magic and magical workings.

423px-Urd_magazineUrda is one of the Norns in Norse mythology. Along with Verðandi (possibly "happening" or "present") and Skuld (possibly "debt" or "future"), Urðr makes up a trio of Norns that are described as deciding the fates of people. Urðr is attested in stanza 20 of the Poetic Edda poem Völuspá and theProse Edda book Gylfaginning. Urðr is together with the Norns located at the well Urðarbrunnr beneath the world ash tree Yggdrasil of Asgard. They spin threads of life, cut marks in the pole figures and measure people's destinies, which shows the fate of all human beings and gods. Norns are always present when a child is born and decide its fate. The three Norns represent the past (Urðr), future (Skuld) and present (Verðandi). Urðr is commonly written as Urd or Urth. In some English translations, her name is glossed with the Old English form of urðr; Wyrd.
