“The Haunting of Whaley House” Director Announces Next Project

thedivinetragedies
"The Divine Tragedies”, a serial killer fever dream is Writer/Director Jose Prendes next project. Based loosely on the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case of 1924, it tells the tale of Charles Brubaker (played by Graham Denman, The Haunting of Whaley House) and his half-brother Thomas Lo Bianco (played by Jon Kondelik, Airplane Vs. Volcano), who concoct a deadly game to test their superior intelligence against the dimwitted masses. This game will eventually lead to murder, and when Genevieve, a beautiful single mother, enters their lives they finally find the perfect girl for their first kill. But problems arise when they quickly discover that Detective Homer Gaul, a cop with a very special gift, is hot on their trail.

"It's a serial killer film, but not quite like anything else," says Prendes. "I know people always say that, but I really think the film will back me up. It's "American Psycho" meets "Videodrome" by way of John Carpenter. I wanted to make something that would really surprise people. Not just in a gory way, which is easy, but in a beautiful way. The same way a David Lynch movie can be beautiful and surprising."

The film is being produced by Jon Kondelik & James Kondelik, under their production company Dual Visions. The Divine Tragedies is the company's first of many feature films to come.

"Dual Visions aims to produce feature films that engage an audience with unique experiences," say the Kondelik Brothers. "People won't be able to forget the things they've seen after watching this film."
Casting is still underway and big announcements are coming soon, but the film has managed to cast genre mainstay and all around good guy Ruben Pla (Insidious, Contracted, Big Ass Spider)  as the frazzled chief of police.

"I'm very excited," says Pla. "Sometimes it's just so great to be able to work under the guidance of a good friend...who also happens to be very talented. That's the case with Jose Prendes' THE DIVINE TRAGEDIES."

Filming will begin at the end of February."

truckHorror will take on Ice Road Truckers in new creature feature horror film. Read the limited details below. Sounds like a pretty cool film. I hope it is like “Feast” because I kind of thought that film rocked.

According to The Wrap, Envision Media Arts has secured the rights to Keith Ray Putman’s action-horror spec script “Red Ice”. The film follow “a trucker hauling emergency supplies across the frozen waterways of arctic Canada who must survive an onslaught of mysterious, man-eating creatures.”

“The ice roads have always been an intriguing, dangerous setting,” said EMA president David Buelow. “Keith’s script puts a very visceral, smart spin on the genre.”

Putman also recently completed “Malicious,” a haunted house movie for the digital age that is in development at Sycamore Pictures (“The Way Way Back”). He’s represented by Chris Sablan at Original Artists.

My Review Of “Midsummer Nightmares II: Summer’s End”

msiiRyan Stacy proves he knows slasher flicks with his return to horror in female slasher sequel “Midsummer Nightmares II: Summer’s End”. The film continues the contemporary tale of Danielle Water’s, viciously, vindictive psycho killer. The story picks up three years after the first film with Audrey Small facing her nightmares once more when Danielle returns to finish what she started. “Midsummer Nightmares II” stars  Christy Faulkner, Erin R. Ryan, Kelci C. Magel, Glen S. Wade II, Kitsie Duncan, Taylor Buchanan, Stacy Freeders and Abby Seagraves among the new and returning cast members in the sequel.

The story in “Midsummer Nightmares II: Summer’s End” continues with that straight forward slasher style that started this franchise ( I say that with wonderful thrills for a future third installment-maybe?!). The film does weaken with some of the story’s dialog on the drama/character interaction segments much as the first one did, at times creating a genuine relationship with the characters situations, however the hardcore writing as far as creating a strong female slasher and fast-paced, all out kill scenes is so much stronger than in the 2011 original film. For me “Summer’s End” just upped the frequency on low budget horror entertainment without having to grasp for gimmicks or new age spins that just don’t allow for a chilling slasher film (i.e. found footage, gory sexploitation grandeur). This film is just honest, grounded true-to-form modern horror. It keeps with the classic concepts but brings in modern contemporary style and atmosphere.

The sound effects and special effects in “Summer’s End” is a bit copy and paste concepts and styles, but not in the this is just cheesy and redundant way, more in the homage, respect for the genre formatted way. If it isn’t broke then don’t go and try and fix it. The effects are classic, creepy aspects that carry you through the film while the soundtrack offers some pretty cool indie tunes that mirror the emotional elements of the film perfectly. Ryan Stacy brings a true respect and love for the genre with his talent and it definitely shows in this film. The special effects are standard slice and dice with more attention paid to pulling off low budget kills that aren’t tacky or cheap looking. It’s body count verses gorefest in “Summer’s End” and that is a nice, clean aspect that makes this film really work on any level. It is a true indie slasher slice of cool, modern horror that I recommend to horror fans, both indie and cult.

Anyway “The Visitors” is based on a Ray Bradbury short story title “Zero Hour” which was in The Illustrated Man is a 1951 book of eighteen science fiction short stories by Ray Bradbury that explores the nature of mankind.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: The Festival of Sementivae / Paganalia

January 24th is the Sementivae, the festival in honor of the gods Tellus and Cerus (agricultural goddesses) to protect the spring sowing. Ceres, of course, is the Roman grain goddess, and Tellus is the earth itself. This festival was held in two parts -- the first part was held from January 24 to January 26, honoring Tellus, and was a season of sowing the fields. The second part, which began a week later on February 2, honored Ceres as the goddess of agriculture. Ceres is the Roman variant of Demeter, who is strongly tied with the changing of the seasons.

Calendar of the Sun 25 Wolfmonath
Sementivae Feria: Seed Blessing
Colors: Green and brown
Element: Earth
Altar: Upon cloth of green and brown set all the seeds for the next year, with the seeds saved from last year's garden in bowls in the center.
Offerings: Give seeds to poor farmers and gardeners.
Daily Meal: Vegan.

Sementivae Feria Invocation
Hear us, Ceres, Mother of the Grain,
You whose breath stirs the seed in the ground,
Though Earth sleeps now in her bed of stone,
We ask for her blessing on these seeds
Which will soon be sowed.
These are our hopes, our dreams,
Our aspirations, all promise and possibilities,
Waiting dry and dormant to be awoken.
Though we will not wake them today,
Soon the time will approach when they shall
Come into the embrace of the warm soil
And blossom into manifestation.
Bless our seeds, Great Ceres,
Mother of the Corn, Spark of the Plowed Earth,
Bless their promise, and ours as well.

(All cry, "Hail Ceres!" Then all surround the seeds and hold their hands over them, and together sing Ohm and Ah in harmonies, to carry Ceres' blessing. The seeds are then placed in a special basket shaped like a cradle, and covered with a cloth, and sung to.)

Chant: Carry our wishes
Carry our hoping
Carry our blessing
Till you be awoken

Also known as the Paganalia, because in ancient Roman society Pagans meant rural agricultural peoples, not what we know it as today. The Paganalia was originally a festival held in the rural areas; a protective celebration of the upcoming spring season of sowing seeds for crops. The Paganalia was held around January 24th and the Sementina, orFeriae Sementivae of Ceres and Tellus was held around January 25th, and a week later, for two separate sowings of seed. According to some sources, the calendar has changed since ancient times, and the festivals may be held in early February, after the Celtic Imbolg.

Be thou blessed by them in whose honour thou shalt be scattered/sprinkled/burned.
Let the pagus keep the feast: let the pagus be purified, and the yearly cakes be offered on the hearths of the pagus.
Let the Mothers of fruits be propitiated with their own cakes of spelt. The Mothers have one threefold office: they give to the seed life to grow, food to grow, a place to grow.
Partners in labour, who changed the ancient ways and showed us better food than acorns, satisfy the farmers with boundless crops, that they may reap the rewards their work deserves. Grant to the tender seeds increase unbroken; let no freezing snows bite the sprouting shoots. When we sow, let the sky be cloudless and the winds blow sweetly.
But when the seed is buried, then may it be sprinkled with water from the sky...
Forbid the birds that feed on the furrows to take the sown grain. And you too, ants, spare this seed: let it lie now, and when it is harvested, you will have a richer reward. Until then, let no rust or mildew darken the crop, nor foul weather turn it sickly pale. May it neither shrivel nor bloat. May the fields be free of weeds and wild oats. May the land yield with interest crops of wheat and of barley and of spelt which twice shall pass the fire.
And may the Mother-goddesses grant our prayers.

My Review Of “Fright Night 2: New Blood”

fright night 2“Fright Night 2: New Blood” is a sequel that isn’t really a sequel at all. The film is directed by Eduardo Rodriguez and brings to life the characters first brought to life in 1985 by Tom Holland. The story as some hinted acknowledgement of the 1988 sequel in the “Fright Night” franchise but truly is an independent film not anchored to the mythos of Charley Brewester and the evil he must battle in vampire Jerry, or in 2013 “New Blood”, Gerri Dandrige. In “New Blood” Charley Brewester and his friends travel to Eastern Europe on a senior class trip to study for a semester in Romania. “Fright Night 2: New Blood” stars Will Payne, Jaime Murray, Sean Power, Sacha Parkinson and Chris Waller.

The story of “Fright Night 2: New Blood” has some good points and some bad points. On the good, this film creates the elaborate melodramatic nightmare that manages to capture the gothic romance vampires in horror held in the 80’s, very much like the original “Fright Night” and “Fright Night 2” managed to create. For the bad point to this “sequel”, “New Blood” totally ignores everything about the “Fright Night” franchise except the characters names and that they are vampires. It really creates a weird frustration about watching the film. I found myself having to fight back the need to be pissed that “Fright Night 2: New Blood” had characters that where killed off in 2011’s “Fright Night” and yet called itself “Fright Night 2”. That is a big fail when tapping into an established franchise’s mythos. Yet I found this story more entertaining and far more viable than 2011’s “Fright Night” starring Colin Farrell. As a vampire film “New Blood” really does work and actually brings in a new vampire aspect that offers vampire and gothic-styled horror fan’s some thrills. It really is a much better film than it should have been and would have really topped my list had it just been “Fright Night: New Blood” instead of the “Fright Night 2” moniker. The 2 forces a set unwritten rule that the film should have respected and if they would have left it off then I would have had nothing but positive remarks for the film.

As for the effects and sound of “New Blood”, it is all really standard stuff expected in this genre and even gives a bit of a creative edge much like “30 Days Of Night” pulled off in the world of vampires. There is no real hokey, or lame effects in this movie, save the dreaded use of CGI that one just has to tolerate in cinema these days. However the practical effects and visual aspects used in “New Blood” allow the film to flow smoothly enough to entertain. The sound effects and over all quality of suspense and “chills” work on a mediocre but acceptable level that doesn’t really disappoint but isn’t overly impressive either. For the most part “Fright Night 2: New Blood” is just a really good spin on a classic tale that manages to both shit on a franchise while simultaneously paying tribute to it as well. For a good gothic vampire horror “New Blood” rocks, but it does walk all over the established story of Charley Brewester and Jerry Dandrige so be ready for it.
