Pagan Festival Shout Out: Libertas (In Honor Of Liberty/Freedom)

libertasLibertas (Latin for Liberty) is the Roman goddess and embodiment of liberty. The spring festival in honor of Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty, is celebrated on April 13.  Libertas is one of the most popular Roman dieties and her name is Freedom. She is an ancient goddess dating back to the beginning of the Republic.

The daughter of Jupiter and Juno, she is depicted as a Roman matron arrayed in white, holding in one hand a broken scepter, and in the other a pike surmounted by a pileus, or cap.  Both were symbols of emancipation; i.e., Roman slaves were released from bondage by a ritual which they were touched with a wand and given a stocking cap as a symbol of their freedom.

Libertas, along with other Roman goddesses, has served as the inspiration for many modern-day symbols, including the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in the United States of America. According to the National Park Service, the Statue's Roman robe is the main feature that invokes Libertas and the symbol of Liberty from which the Statue derives its name.

April 13th is also the 2nd day of Cerealia in honor of the goddess Ceres (here)

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Cerealia- Festival To Ceres

ceresApril 12th begins the ,Cerealia the festival in honor of Ceres, the goddess of Agriculture, grain, fertility and motherly relationships. Ceres was originally the central deity in Rome's so-called plebeian or Aventine Triad. Her seven-day April festival of Cerealia included the popular Ludi Ceriales (Ceres' games). She was also honoured in the Maylustration of fields at the Ambarvalia festival, at harvest-time, and during Roman marriages and funeral rites.

Cerealia, was held from mid to late April. It was organised by her plebeian aediles and included circus games (ludi circenses). It opened with a horse-race in the Circus Maximus, whose starting point lay below and opposite to her Aventine Temple; the turning post at the far end of the Circus was sacred to Consus, a god of grain-storage. After the race, foxes were released into the Circus, their tails ablaze with lighted torches, perhaps to cleanse the growing crops and protect them from disease and vermin, or to add warmth and vitality to their growth. From c.175 BC, Cerealia included ludi scaenici(theatrical religious events) through April 12 to 18.

In ancient Roman religion, the Cerealia was the major festival. Its archaic nature is indicated by a nighttime ritual described by Ovid. Blazing torches were tied to the tails of live foxes, who were released into the Circus Maximus. The origin and purpose of this ritual are unknown; it may have been intended to cleanse the growing crops and protect them from disease and vermin, or to add warmth and vitality to their growth. Ovid offers an aetiological explanation: long ago, at ancient Carleoli, a farm-boy caught a fox stealing chickens and tried to burn it alive. The fox escaped, ablaze; in its flight it fired the fields and their crops, which were sacred to Ceres. Ever since, foxes are punished at her festival.

My Review Of “Patrick” 2013

Patrick“Patrick” is a remake of the classic 1978 film of the same name. This updated telling of the somber, clinical horror is directed by Mark Hartley and stars Charles Dance, Rachel Griffiths, Sharni Vinson, Peta Sergeant, Damon Gameau, Martin Crewes. “Patrick” is the story of a young man in a coma who is the subject of a mad scientist's cruel and unusual experiments. When Kathy Jacquard, a young nurse, begins working at the isolated psychiatric facility under Dr. Roget, she becomes fascinated with Patrick and soon the comatose man begins showing signs of supernatural abilities.

The story in “Patrick” is a really dark, nefarious tale of mad science and extreme circumstance. “Patrick” takes on the most colorful of urban myths where cold, calculative doctors explore scientific discovery and notoriety at the behest of the helpless patient. It is the core of most nightmares surrounding hospitals, clinics and mental institutions. So “Patrick” is a story that should please any horror fan. This film offers the same evenly-paced melancholy with a bit of unease as the classic version, but the updated look and feel give more edge to the film. There isn’t a big change to the story or situations in this remake generally speaking which normally would make a remake pointless and boring but with “Patrick” there is still that creepy, since of dread and chilling coldness that the original film held.

The acting in “Patrick” is pretty standard for a film with a nice enough budget. The actors are all well known from various other ventures and their ability to give life to the characters shows on screen. This film doesn’t demand to much depth or complexity of character and the director doesn’t offer anymore than what the original story called for which works but at times kind of gives the film that whole “going through the motions” sort of vibe. Still the actors offer believable, solid performances and the dramatic overture to their interactions presents a traditional macabre performance.

The special effects and soundtrack used in “Patrick” is tight, much like the acting, with plenty of creative gruesomeness. The kill scenes aren’t as visceral as most modern horror films tend to be but they work and offer enough blood-n-guts goodness to satisfy. The suspense isn’t really as strong as I would have like, especially considering it is a remake of such a notable cult classic. Maybe cause I saw the original more than once this film just seemed like a “basic” update which isn’t saying anything bad about it, it just would have been nice to see the extra effort made to shock and thrill those of us who where familiar with the original-offer a modern, fresh atmosphere of fright. The soundtrack is eerie enough but still much like the shock factor it doesn't really heighten the suspenseful nature or chilling overcast of the film. That being said “Patrick” is an entertaining, creepy film that manages to breathe new life in a horror story classic.

The network that debuted the original film “Steve Nile’s Remains” will unveil the first season of ‘Z Nation’, a 13 episode series that will premiere in the fall 2014. The series is produced by The Asylum and personally I think this seems like a match made in horror heaven.

In producing their first ever weekly series, our long-time partners The Asylum have created a different way of telling an iconic story.”

In Z Nation, three years have passed since the zombie virus has gutted the country, and a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood. Although the antibodies he carries are the world’s last, best hope for a vaccine, he hides a dark secret that threatens them all. "Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys" Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Go Back In The Water

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.
1
Looking to get in on the campy "Sharknado" phenomenon, Animal Planet has set its own horror film from The Asylum -- the same people behind "Sharknado" -- called "Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys," set to premiere this Memorial Day weekend.

The two-hour scripted movie stars Shannen Doherty ("Beverly Hills,90210"), Christopher Lloyd ("Back to the Future") and Jason Brooks("Days of Our Lives"), and is directed by James Cullen Bressack ("Pernicious"). Doherty and company battle lampreys -- eel-like fish with huge teeth and funnel-shaped mouths -- after they slide their way into the city's sewer system and start terrorizing the residents of a
small Michigan town.

2
Brooks plays Michael, a fish and wildlife expert who moves to the town with his wife, Cate (Doherty), after being summoned by the town mayor, Akerman (Lloyd), to help deal with its attacking fish problem.
("River Monsters" star Jeremy Wade also makes a cameo.) But with these blood-suckers on the loose, the town's residents quickly learn that a casual dip in the pool or routine trip to the toilet can turn deadly as the lampreys hunt for their next victim. The logline states, "There is absolutely nowhere to run, and no one is safe."

"Blood Lake" will premiere on Sunday, May 25 at 9 p.m. as part of the network's third annual "Monster Week" (actually nine days long) programming block.

Other Monster Week specials include "Man-Eating Zombie Cats" -- about big cats with a thirst for human blood -- and a quest to find a giant crocodile tormenting a village in "Nature's Most Wanted."

In the early 1600's, Countess Elizabeth Bathory slaughtered more than 600 young women, believing if she bathed in the blood of virgins that she would stay young and beautiful forever. Still alive today, she's found a perfect hunting ground for her 'Botox' as an abstinence educator in conservative America, and the young ladies of San Griento High are poised to be her next victims. But will her unholy ritual finally be stopped by Leah Ratliff, a feminist blogger and ambitious reporter for the school paper?

Directed by John V. Knowles, Written & Produced by Lotti Pharriss Knowles and Starring: Allison Scagliotti (SyFy's WAREHOUSE 13), Francia Raisa (ABC Family's THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER), Louise Griffiths (THE REVENANT), Eddy Rioseco (ABC's PARENTHOOD), Greer Grammer (MTV's AWKWARD), Amy Okuda (THE GUILD), Jennifer Gimenez (Bravo's THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF BEVERLY HILLS), and Stuart Gordon (RE-ANIMATOR).
"Delightfully cheesy horror comedy...takes a John Hughes high school world and puts a blackened spin on it."

--Film Threat
"Chastity Bites both honors and sends up a lot of classic horror tropes and conventions. The result is a fun, campy horror/comedy that’s both genuinely funny and genuinely scary."
--Fanboy Comics
"About 10 minutes into Chastity Bites I realized that I had a stupid grin plastered on my face. Overall the film is a pretty damn fun horror-comedy with a talented lead and some great dialogue. It’s kinda like Fright Night meets Mean Girls... The result is definitely worth 90 minutes of your time."
